Funny story, I tried making the sponge twice, with two different recipes. It tasted fine, but wasn't puffing up. Then I made scones (also terrible) and cookies (delicious but incredibly flat). Nothing was rising. I had my rage face on.
Then smart one here checked the baking powder. Two years expired, errbody. Thank you, thank you. It's apparently been working just fine until the marathon of baking things that needed to rise this weekend.
A friend's girlfriend brought masks, shortbread and chocolate all the way from Manchester to heighten the festivities.
Jolly good.
