So Jazzed

Another year, another Jazz Age Lawn Party at Governor's Island. I am simply, utterly unable to let a thing like this happen without getting dressed up, so I did.

And it was wonderful.

This year was breezy and beautiful, and we brought a little picnic.

Hoooray tomato tart. I had the foresight to make some dough yesterday so it was a simple "kill two tomatoes with one stone" situation.

My dress is actually a smock/robe over a Victorian nightgown. I tied everything together, literally, with a velvet ribbon. Thennnn there are a few vintage stores parked at the festival and I found this '50s silk coat for $15. It's in iffy shape, but a few darns will fix it.

If you haven't been, go. Here's some dancing people to convince you.

The Night Circus

For a week, a curious street fair has been parked right outside of my apartment.

Untitled

It's apparently to celebrate a saint or a feast of a saint or something holy for the church down the street (I'm Catholic, can't you tell?).

Untitled

This guy is right outside of my door and I can hear him yelling unfunny epithets at passersby to spur them into buying and throwing balls.

This part of Brooklyn is very Italian and Puerto Rican, so the crowd is split about half and half.

There are also a lot of cops standing around, for no particular reason.

I'm more than looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow, bumming around the farmer's market and checking out a few bands in the city. O summer, you sultry minx.

Weekend in Pictures: Success

Saturday night: Wine Riot in the South End.

Tastings, meeting fun people, photo booth. Evidence of which I have yet to see (UPDATE YOUR FLICKR NAO, PHOTOGRAPHER!).

Sunday night: Lily Allen at the House of Blues.

As I said in my live updates from the show, I was an island amidst a large sea of Britney Spears fans (Lily did her extremely well-known cover of "Womanizer" for the encore and the kids went WILLLDD!).

Monday: Boston Marathon.

(My friend brought a freshman along to the festivities.)

More photos right this way.

Take 1

Chicago Saturday, Saturday, Saturday was sort of a bust.

I mean, I had a pretty good time and I loved the weather, but the Andersonville [Swedish] Midsommar Fest? Was not very Swedish. And the Wrigleyville Summerfest was about 2 blocks long and 100% just for the neighborhood.

The Swedish fest had high expectations in my book, because I've been to a few other "ethnic" fests in Chicago, over the years. The Italians always have some crazy huge party, and Oktoberfest is usually crammed with people and completely German.

I wanted like, huge blonde Viking descendants striding around and drinking lingonberry ale. Instead, I saw Irish dancers, reggae bands, and people eating Mexican food. I did manage to find a corner of the place with some Swedish dancers, war helmets for sale, and a Swedish bar. That was pretty cool.

Next weekend is looking sexy: Taste of Randolph St and the Lincoln Park Summerfest.
