Art Schmart

I was in Dublin this weekend but, before I left, I got cultured.

Thursday was a big night in Hackney-- a long stretch of art galleries on and around Vyne Street was open late. And, there was free beer. I went on the suggestion of one of the designers at work, and it was seriously a good time. The other two interns and I took the bus from the tamer side of Old Street and ended up in East London heaven. The streets were crawling with good-looking people in skinny jeans and crazy headgear, all drinking and hanging out between gallery visits. Most of the art was modern painting, but I found a few cool places with photography and installations. Whoever invented the free beer aspect was a genius: everyone seemed to look beyond the complete insanity of some of the art and just had fun. After walking around a bit, we went to the Old Truman Brewery to meet up with some of my coworkers' friends at another gallery.

A lot of the people I was introduced to are street artists (read: graffiti). Graffiti as art, you say? All of these guys went to art school and some of them, like my coworker, are in design. I realized after talking for a bit that I had actually taken pictures of them mid-tag a few weeks ago:
This whole wall is now completely covered up with text in orange, black, and red colors. It's beautiful and really stunning when you come across it suddenly.

This semester, I've really gotten into street art. Stuff like this from Lisbon (Banksy?)
and this from London (definitely Banksy)
is stenciling, a different approach than straightforward text.

It just goes to show that you can't put people, or what they do, into a simple box. Right, little martian frog man?
Right.
