Mad, Innit?
At work, I've been doing some writing for a newsletter. I decided one of the blurbs called for a phrase common in the North, especially from Manchester. One of the girls came up with "mad for it!" which apparently everyone says up there. My coworkers like to occasionally mock my accent, so after one particularly bad butchering of a mid-Texan cowboy twang, I responded with a British accent. The room went quiet and then one of the creatives, who hails from somewhere in the Midlands, taught me how to say "mad for it!" with a Manchester accent. It involves not moving your mouth too much, and adding "man" at the end. I improved it by twirling my hair and snapping my gum, all the while saying the phrase with a lockjaw and slur. And lo, the respect I gained.
